2nd Training Run – Kilde in the lead
19.01.2017
Kitzbühel witnessed an exciting 2nd training run for the Hahnenkamm-Downhill on Saturday (January 21st, 11:30 am).
It was beautiful weather as Aleksandar Aamodt Kilde (NOR) set today’s fastest time of 1:56,33 minutes. His lead on Austrian racer Hannes Reichelt, however, was only two hundredths of a second. Kjetil Jansrud (NOR) was seven hundredths of a second behind and came third.
“It’s really icy at the top, which took me by surprise. It was good further down, though”, said Kilde after his run. “I’ll give it my all in the race, I like it when it’s icy. It’s just so much fun to race here. I’ve got a good feeling.”
Hannes Reichelt (AUT), on the other hand, did not have a good feeling after crossing the finish line. “I was actually quite surprised about my time. I didn’t do well in the upper part, lost my line at the Steilhang exit. What makes it difficult is the combination of an uneven piste and icy conditions“, explained the runner up.
Gröden-victor Max Franz (AUT) was able to improve on his 15th place from yesterday’s training. „I’m happy with my time, though the last section didn’t quite go as I’d hoped. You just mustn’t cut yourself any slack from start to finish”, said the Corinthian racer.
"Every centimetre counts"
Matthias Mayer (AUT) is frustrated after his not-so-perfect run. „It was more difficult than yesterday. My run in the top section did me no favours and I’m not particularly satisfied”, said Mayer. “The first six athletes’ times are extremely close together. That’s been happening a lot this season, though. In the end, every gate – every centimetre - counts.“
Much like Reichelt, Romed Baumann (AUT) seemed surprised about his time. „I couldn’t believe it as I arrived in the finish area. It’s quite a challenge at the top but the Hausberg is a much more straightforward ski – the piste is perfect there. It’s also been a long time since the bottom section of the course was prepared so well”, explained the Tyrolean.
Otmar Striedinger (AUT), who broke his nose and injured his thigh in the first training run, seemed to be ready for some action. “On the whole, I got very lucky. I decided yesterday that I was definitely still going to ski today. It’s the highlight of the year, you just want to be a part of it. I was a bit nervous at the start, but it all went well. I’m feeling confident.“
