Explained: The new start number allocation procedure for speed races

New regulations for start number allocations for speed races in the World Cup have been in place since the beginning of the season. In contrast to previous years, top racers can choose their own start number, however with certain restrictions. The reason for this change was to maintain the excitement associated with the Downhill and Super G disciplines for a little longer. The New Regulations: The top ten in the World Cup Start List (WCSL) – starting with the leader – may select their own start number. They can choose from all the odd numbers between 1 and 19. The even numbers between 2 and 20 are then drawn for the skiers ranked 11 to 20 in the WCSL. Athletes between 21 and 30 are then assigned the remaining start numbers in the top 30 by means of a draw. Prior to this season, start numbers 16 to 22 were drawn and assigned to the first seven in the World Rank list, the next eight for positions 8 to 15. The Reining 15 racers received the numbers 1 to 7 and 23 to 30 respectively.
